Spot the signs
Cluster flies commonly gather in upper rooms and roof spaces as the weather cools. You may notice sluggish flies around sunny windows, or dead flies accumulating in the loft.
Repeated gatherings on windowsills, upper-floor windows or the sunnier side of the building.
Groups of flies in sheltered roof spaces, with dead flies collecting on accessible surfaces.
A similar problem each autumn, sometimes with flies appearing indoors again during milder spells.
A quick identification guide
Ladybirds, lacewings, yellow swarming flies and cluster flies can share sheltered overwintering sites, including lofts and window frames. Finding them together does not necessarily mean they need the same treatment.
Ladybirds, particularly harlequins, can gather around windows and sheltered roof spaces in autumn. Their colours and spot patterns vary. They are useful garden insects, so treatment is not always necessary.
Recognisable by delicate, net-like wings and long antennae. Green or brown adults may shelter indoors over winter. Their larvae eat aphids outdoors; small numbers usually need no treatment.
Tiny yellow-and-black flies that can gather in very large numbers around lofts and windows. Their size distinguishes them from cluster flies. Identification helps us recommend the right approach.
Larger, greyish flies with golden hairs on the thorax. Adults seek sheltered places to overwinter and can become sluggish indoors. Repeated seasonal gatherings are a common reason to request a survey.

We supply and install suitable electric fly killers where they can form part of a practical management plan. Positioning, servicing and safe access matter as much as choosing the unit.
A suitable nearby electrical socket is needed. If an additional supply is required, an electrician will need to arrange it. Loft installations also need consideration of the surroundings and your insurer’s requirements.

Adults enter sheltered buildings to overwinter. A property that offers suitable shelter may attract new flies in later seasons, even after an effective treatment. We explain what can realistically be achieved and whether seasonal follow-up is worthwhile.
