German or Oriental cockroaches?
Other cockroach species can occur in the UK. This page focuses on German and Oriental cockroaches, two of the most commonly encountered pest species in UK buildings and important species to consider when investigating activity in our Hampshire service area.
Their habits differ, so identification helps us decide where to inspect, position monitors and focus treatment. We do not assume every sighting is one of these two species: identification is confirmed during inspection. Sizes below refer to adults; young cockroaches are smaller and wingless.

| Feature | German cockroach | Oriental cockroach |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific name | Blattella germanica | Blatta orientalis |
| Appearance | Usually around 10–15 mm long; light brown, with two dark parallel stripes behind the head. | Usually around 20–24 mm long; shiny dark brown to almost black, with a broader, heavier appearance. |
| Typical hiding places | Warm, humid spaces close to food and water: kitchens, appliance motors, cupboards and service voids. | Cooler, damp locations: basements, ground-floor service areas, drains and spaces around pipework. |
| Movement | Can climb many smooth surfaces, so activity may extend into high-level cupboards and equipment. | Less able to climb smooth surfaces; activity is often concentrated at lower levels. |
| Egg cases | The female carries her egg case until close to hatching. | Egg cases are deposited in sheltered locations, where they may be difficult to find. |
A photograph or securely contained specimen can help with an initial enquiry. We confirm identification and the extent of activity during inspection.
Signs worth acting on
Live insects
Cockroaches often hide during the day and emerge when a room is quiet. Sightings around food preparation or storage areas need prompt attention.
Droppings and egg cases
Small dark deposits, shed skins or brown egg capsules around cracks, equipment and service routes can indicate activity.
Repeated reports
Reports from several rooms or adjoining units can point to linked hiding places or movement through shared services.
How treatment differs between the species
German cockroaches: close, precise targeting
Inspection concentrates on warm equipment and tight harbourages near food and moisture. Small, carefully positioned gel bait placements and monitoring can form part of the programme. Cleaning away competing food, inspecting incoming equipment and checking adjoining areas are important.
Oriental cockroaches: moisture and access routes
Inspection gives particular attention to damp low-level areas, drainage connections, service ducts and building defects. Treatment may combine suitable baits or targeted residual products with moisture reduction and proofing recommendations. A drain or building specialist may be needed where defects are suspected.
Both species need a coordinated approach. The product choice depends on the site, activity and previous treatment history, rather than the species name alone. We consider food safety, sensitive equipment and access restrictions before selecting any insecticide.
Gel baits can allow precise placement in suitable sheltered locations. The product, placement and follow-up are selected following assessment and must comply with the authorised label.

A clear approach to cockroach treatment
1. Inspect and identify
We assess the species, affected areas, likely harbourages, sanitation, water sources and movement between rooms or units.
2. Agree and treat
We explain the proposed treatment, preparation and access arrangements. Targeted methods are chosen for the site and used in accordance with their authorised labels.
3. Monitor and review
Follow-up checks assess activity, bait uptake and newly emerging insects. We review cleaning, proofing and maintenance recommendations alongside treatment.
Cockroach control FAQs
Will one visit solve the problem?
An established infestation usually needs a programme of treatment and monitoring. Concealed insects and later hatching young mean that an immediate absence of sightings does not prove the problem is resolved.
Should staff spray the insects?
Please tell us about any products already applied. Avoid introducing additional sprays during an agreed baiting programme without advice; they can contaminate bait or change insect movement.
Can the business stay open?
This depends on the affected areas and treatment selected. We agree preparation, protection of food and equipment, access restrictions and cleaning instructions before treatment. Do not assume all areas can remain in use.
What can we do to prevent a return?
Store food securely, remove grease and food debris, manage waste, repair leaks and inspect deliveries and second-hand equipment. Seal suitable gaps after the source and service access have been assessed.
Do you treat domestic properties?
We are not currently taking direct domestic bookings for cockroach treatments. We can consider enquiries from commercial clients, including letting agents arranging work at managed properties and hospitality businesses.
