We have not stopped with Mole control work around Hampshire, particularly in Andover and Winchester recently. Usually come British summer time this is when we would take our mole control kit out of our vehicles and place into storage until the autumn. But not this year!

As the wet weather normally reduces and the ground dries up, this pushes mole activity back towards woodland areas and hedgerows where moisture retains within root systems and shaded ground.

It has been a strange year for Mole control and pest control in general. With warmer weathers and wetter summers, this has helped pest activity increase ten fold in all areas.

Wasp Nests Are Starting To Appear in Andover, Hampshire

It has been a slow start to the wasp season this year. We haven’t received anywhere close to as many calls as we had in June last year for wasp nest treatments in Andover.

Warmer winters will also be to blame for increased wasp activity throughout all of the UK

When we do receive calls for wasps we actually try and advise for customers to refrain from treatment if at all possible. Especially in the early stages of its life. Only if the nests are in a non-sensitive area or if the wasps are located in an area that is isolated or undisturbed/safe.

Wasp Facts

  • Wasps are probably best known for disturbing picnics and BBQ's, but they actually do a great job in balancing the eco system.
  • Each summer social wasps in the UK capture an estimated 14 million kilograms of insect prey, such as caterpillars, greenfly, some spiders and other insects. Perhaps they should be knows as the gardeners friend?
  • The adult wasps don't actually eat the insects they catch though. They chop them up and return them to the nest to feed the growing larvae
  • Adult wasps actually only feed on sugars, these mainly come from flower nectar and honeydew produced by aphids. Wasp larvae also produce a sugary liquid that the adults feed on.
  • There is also a lot of sugar on pub tables and at picnics or from fruit trees. Adult wasps don't really need protein, as they don't live that long. So they load up on carbs.
  • When wasps are on the hunt for nectar, they can become accidental pollinators by travelling from plant to plant carrying pollen. Okay they may not be as efficient pollinators as Honeybees, but they still have a valuable role.

Most frequent questions and answers

No. This is not true!

Although Wasps are meant to be territorial, we will often treat nests that are situated pretty much on top of each other, or at the very least an inch apart.

No. We can usually treat a nest successfully so that the wasps die off within the nest or abandon the nest after a few hours.

We also find removing the nest upon treatment can encourage returning foraging wasps to linger around the nest site, as they try to locate the now removed nest.

Removal can be done a ta later date if required.

Although it may be a sensible choice to remove a wasp nest at night, due to the majority being in the nest at this time. You can treat and remove a nest morning or afternoon if you need to.

This is not true. Wasps will never reuse an old nest!

Each year in the spring, a queen wasp will construct the very first cells and then the nest will start to develop from there.

Do Wasp traps actually work?

Using wasp pots or wasp traps can be an effective way to control problem wasps in the summer time.

Whether you’re trying to enjoy spending some relaxing time in the garden with food or drink in hand or perhaps in a pub garden enjoying the local beer options. It’s never long until the relentless pesky wasp turns up to ruin your fun.

Installing wasp traps isn’t as easy as placing some coca-cola or fruit juice in a pot or jar and miraculously trapping every wasp in a 2 mile radius!

There is some science to working with wasp traps. Things like wind direction, colour of the trap, how much sunlight is on them and what type of bait/lure is used all play a part of how effective wasp traps can be.

If you don’t get these factors right, they can end up rendering the traps useless and the wasps will continue to visit the source that’s attracted them and ignore the traps.
