Wasp nest season: spotting activity around buildings

Case study · Wasp advice

Regular wasp traffic around a roof or outbuilding can reveal a nest that has been developing out of sight. This case involved a nest beneath corrugated sheets at a stable.

Wasp nest found beneath the roof of a stable building

A nest beneath a stable roof

The original visit featured here involved a nest built under corrugated sheets at a stable unit. Roof edges and sheltered spaces can make nests difficult to spot directly.

You may first notice insects repeatedly arriving at and leaving the same gap. Observe from a distance rather than climbing up or moving roofing to investigate.

Assess the risk to people and animals

We consider how the building is used, whether the nest is likely to be disturbed and what access is available. A nest in an unused part of a site may be treated differently from one beside a busy doorway or stable.

Keep the area clear

If you suspect a nest near a regularly used building, keep people and animals away from the immediate area while you arrange advice. Do not block the entrance or spray at passing insects.

Treatment and aftercare

Where treatment is needed, the technician chooses an approach suitable for the nest and surroundings, then explains the precautions and what to expect afterwards. Treatment method and time to settle can vary.
