A large wasp appearing in spring can cause concern, but an individual sighting does not establish that there is an active nest at your property.
Watch for a repeated flight path
In spring, queen wasps emerge from sheltered overwintering places and search for nesting sites. Our original article recorded a number of enquiries about these early sightings.
One wasp passing through the garden is different from repeated visits to the same opening. From a safe distance, note whether it is returning to a roof edge, shed or other sheltered spot.
Size and markings are not enough
Queens are generally larger than workers, but size and markings can vary between species. We would not recommend deciding what treatment is needed from a single marking or photograph alone.
We assess nests, not every passing wasp
Finding a wasp outdoors does not mean it needs controlling. If you suspect a nest, tell us its location and whether people are likely to disturb it.
